Pheromones are chemical substances secreted into the environment by the insects through which they communicate each other. Although this communication mechanism is known since the 17th century, it was not until the middle of 20th century that the first such chemical substance isolated and extensively researched.

Pheromones are divided into three major categories:

  • Aggregation pheromones: substances excreted by certain species and leads to increase of the density of insect population around the source
  • Dispersal pheromones: substances that stimulate flight and other defense mechanisms.
  • Sexual pheromones: regulate the behavior of the adult insects of certain species and encourage mating and reproduction.

In practice pheromones are divided in 2 major categories:
